Why The Arrow Awards
Updated: Aug 9, 2019
When we started thinking about the possibility of a children's awards contest, we were immediately drawn to the idea of an arrow for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, an arrow was originally used as a tool. Archery was a practical skill needed to find food and to defend one's territory. It was also used in designs to give directions and eventually, archery and arrows became a sport, a way to show one's strength and eye and hand coordination. In other words, it had multiple functions throughout history.
As we researched other contests, looked at other literary awards, we decided we wanted something that exuded a strength of purpose, served multiple genres, but also pointed the way, literally, to the best StoryTeller in history.
Scripturally, there are over 30 verses in the Bible about arrows. While most use arrows as a weapon, whether literally or figuratively, there was one that struck a chord.
"Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate." Psalm 127:4-5
As believers in Christ Jesus and also in the power of literature in a child's life, we knew that we wanted to recognize those writers who are speaking the truth of Jesus and know the value of being unafraid to proclaim their faith within the pages of their books. Arrows are not suppose to be kept in a quiver, safe from use. They are to be used with purpose. We believe children's authors are also called by our Heavenly Father for a purpose ... to tell stories that share the message of Jesus Christ with our children.
The CBA market is competitive and challenging, yet we know from research and face-to-face interactions that today's parents are desperately seeking and our children are absolutely in need of faith-based literature that uplifts and challenges them, entertains them and above all, encourages their spiritual journey with the Lord.
Thus, the name of our literary contest was found. The Arrow Awards.
The purpose of The Arrow Awards is to point toward excellence in Christian children's literature. We strive to acknowledge and affirm those authors who have written and published from a calling to direct young readers to a relationship with God and to their walk with Him in their day to day life, whether through a board book, an activity book, a comic, or a novel.
We are pleased to offer The Arrow Awards to writers within the publishing industry and look forward to seeing it grow and bring attention to the writers who participate in it.
